This seminar is supposed to be a short introduction to linear spectroscopy and if there will be time to nonlinear optical spectroscopy. The first goal will be to describe what is the microscopic-macroscopic connection for the optical response. This point is something specific to solid materials. The second goal will be to describe different level of electron-electron interactions in the optical response: independent-particle approximation, crystal local fields and excitons.
