Electronic nearsightedness of matter:
the concept and some quantitative estimates.

The concept of "nearsightedness" articulates, quantifies and limits a
common chemical consensus that covalent and metallic binding are local
quantum chemical phenomena. After a qualitative introduction, preliminary
analytical and numerical results for simple models will be presented.
