It will be shown that both one body and many body effects must be treated to correctly describe core-level photoemission, XPS, and X-ray adsorption into bound states, NEXAFS. These spectroscopies have a great potential for providing information about the electronic structure of matter but to achieve this objective proper treatments of one and many body terms must be made as will be demonstrated with examples from the work of the authors and their collaborators.
