Pressure tuning is therefore a useful tool in the search for new solid state materials with enhanced properties. From the microscopic point of view, pressure allows precise tuning of a fundamental parameter, interatomic distance. Concomitantly, the network of chemical bonds ensuring the cohesion of matter can get quite transformed as well as their very nature can change radically.
